Fourteen athletes have been selected to participate in the 2011 CWNT training camp that will be held from June 5-9 at the Mississauga Campus of the University of Toronto. From this group, 12 will be selected to travel to Mexico on June 10.
In a draw that took place on May 25 in the host city of Merida, Canada was chosen to play against Puerto Rico, Guatemala and Mexico in Group A. Canada will begin play on June 13 against Guatemala, then will play Puerto Rico the following day and wrap preliminary play on June 15 versus Mexico.
"We have begun to work with another very young group of athletes and coaching staff for the upcoming championship,” said Carly Clarke, the Head Coach of the CWNT.
“The girls have displayed a high level of dedication, focus and hard work since our initial assessment camp in April. We are excited to work towards making their first international experience with Canada Basketball a positive one."
The FIBA Americas U16 Championship features the best age-eligible players from the three zones that make up FIBA Americas. Other nations that have qualified to participate in this summer’s tournament are Argentina, Brazil, the United States and Venezuela. Countries from the Central American and Caribbean zones have yet to be decided.
This year’s CWNT program is filled with provincial all-stars, including standouts from last summer’s national championships in Toronto. The group is led by Emma Wolfram (Kamloops, B.C.), who was a first team all-star at the 17U National Championship, and the 15U National Championship tournament Most Valuable Player, Kia Nurse (Hamilton). Other notable players include 15U National Championship first team all-stars Kolbie Orum (Maple Ridge, B.C.), Audrey-Ann Caron-Goudreau (Gatineau, Que.) and second team all-stars Aimee Wilson (Chestermere, Alta.), Anmol Mattu (Richmond, B.C.), and Hannah Jardine (St. John’s, N.L.).
“We are excited once again this year to work with another group of very young athletes to provide them with sound coaching and guidance in their training that will help equip them for their first international competition,” says Denise Dignard, Manager of Women’s Elite Performance of Canada Basketball.
“Early exposure to international basketball gives our young females a visual frame of reference of other top athletes of their age and sets the stage as they embark on their journey to becoming world class in women’s basketball. Our goal is to build on our previous age-group women’s national team success by qualifying a team for the 2012 FIBA U17 World Championship for Women.”
This year’s tournament marks only the second time FIBA Americas will host a tournament for women aged 16 and under. In the first tournament for this age group in 2009, the CWNT lost to the U.S. in the championship game, and captured the silver medal, which qualified the team for the 2010 U17 World Championship for Women in France.
The top three finishers of the FIBA Americas tournament will qualify for the 2012 FIBA U17 World Championships for Women. The tournament begins on June 13 and runs until June 18 in Merida, in Mexico's Yucatan.
All Team Canada game summaries will be posted on www.basketball.ca.
