SEGOVIA, Spain - Canada's Senior Women's Team continued their tuneup for the 2011 FIBA Americas Championship for Women with another close loss in a tournament in Segovia, Spain. This time, the 66-59 defeat came against the host nation.
Canada got off to a fast start, taking an 11-point lead after the first quarter, which was cut to five by halftime. In the second half, Spain continued to climb back against the Canadians, which led to the eventual victory.
"We showed great toughness and played very strong defensively, but our limited preparation showed against a team that is peaking for the European championships," said Head Coach Allison McNeill.
Leading the Canadian attack were national team veterans Kim Smith (Mission, B.C.) with 13 points and Chelsea Aubry (Kitchener, Ont.) with 10. Defensively, Shona Thorburn (Hamilton, Ont.) led the way with 10 rebounds and Lizanne Murphy (Beaconsfield, Que.) chipped in with six.
Smith believes that despite the loss, there are positives to be taken out of this game.
"We came out great and had a strong start, we took the team who finished third at last year's worlds right to the end, and we just need to work on our execution at the very end of the game," said Smith.
Canada plays Japan on Monday.
