Honors for the freshman duo from Toronto

AUSTIN, Texas -- University of Texas freshman Tristan Thompson claimed the team’s Most Valuable Player honor in a vote of his peers, highlighting the 2010-11 men’s basketball team banquet held Thursday evening at the Frank Erwin Center. Also his teammate and city mate from Toronto, Cory Josephs, won Earlene Fulmer 3-Point Attack Award and top assist man award. Thompson was one of five finalists for the Wayman Tisdale Award, an honor given by the U.S. Basketball Writers Association (USBWA) to the National Freshman of the Year. The Big 12 Conference Freshman of the Year, Thompson also earned first-team NABC All-District 8 and USBWA All-District VII honors. He led the team in rebounding (7.8 rpg), blocked shots (86), double-doubles (10) and field goal percentage (.546) and ranked second in scoring (13.1 ppg). Craig Way, “Voice of the Longhorns,” played host to the event. Texas concluded the 2010-11 season with a 28-8 record (13-3 Big 12 Conference) and advanced to the NCAA Tournament Third Round. The Horns were ranked No. 8 in the final Associated Press poll.
